In South Africa, private healthcare offers world-class treatment, but it comes with costs that can extend far beyond what medical aid schemes cover.

Specialist fees, co-payments, sub-limits and network provider restrictions are now part and parcel of the healthcare landscape. Even with comprehensive medical aid plans, medical treatments can leave you facing significant out-of-pocket expenses. Gap cover gives individuals and families real protection against these unanticipated financial shocks, providing peace of mind when unexpected medical expenses arise.

Real value demonstrated through real claims
Over the years, we have seen just how powerful this protection can be, and this is evident in the experiences of our clients. For example, one policyholder has had cover with Turnberry for seven years. Over that time, their total premiums have amounted to just over R42,000. In that same period, they have been faced with significant medical expense shortfalls, and their gap cover has paid out almost R680,000.

Another long-standing member paid around R46,000 in premiums across eight years and has claimed more than R576,000. A third member, who has been a client for seven years, has paid less than R19,000 in premiums and yet has received cover of more than R480,000 for medical expense shortfalls. While these are some of the most extreme cases, they clearly show the benefits of sound financial planning and of having gap cover in place to supplement increasing medical expense shortfalls.

Why medical aid alone is no longer enough
Many people still assume that having medical aid provides complete protection. The reality is that this is no longer the case. Specialist tariffs frequently exceed scheme rates. Co-payments are increasingly applied to scans, procedures and oncology treatments, and Designated Service Provider (DSP) restrictions can lead to penalties when treatment happens outside of this network. Patients often have little control over many of these expenses. For example, you cannot choose which anaesthetist a surgeon uses, regardless of whether or not they are a DSP, and for cancer treatment, the co-payments can prove significant but are not optional if treatment is to continue.

These trends continue to intensify. Medical schemes are adding new co-payments each year, and more treatments fall under sub-limits. Without gap cover, these costs fall directly on individuals and families, often at moments when they are already facing health-related stress.

Affordable cover for significant protection
Despite these escalating risks, gap cover remains accessible and cost-effective, with family and individual rates as well as different cover options available depending on your needs. For households over 65 on our Premier option, for example, the monthly contribution is R1,060, and it covers the entire family under one rate. Families under the age of 65 on our Optimal product will pay R558 per month. Younger individuals entering the market can access protection from as little as R180 a month on our Dynamic option.

When compared with the real-world financial exposure that can arise from routine hospital care, scans or specialist treatment, these premiums are highly affordable and are an essential layer of protection, ensuring that people do not have to choose between medical needs and financial stability.

Making informed decisions about your healthcare cover
The difference between premiums paid and benefits received makes the advantage of gap cover as an additional layer on top of medical aid clear. Medical aid provides access to quality care and private hospital treatment; gap cover ensures that the shortfalls and co-payments associated with that care do not derail long-term financial wellbeing.

Having the right cover in place can mean the difference between focusing on recovery and dealing with overwhelming medical bills. Real people, real claims and real outcomes show just how valuable that peace of mind can be. Preparing for the unexpected is the financially responsible thing to do, and your broker or financial advisor can help you to choose the best gap cover to suit your needs now and in the future.

Client Testimonials

Turnberry have been absolutely amazing. Mitze was the consultant on our claim and she went above and beyond to assist us. The first claim was submitted online, thereafter when I tried to submit the form for another claim, the online form was not available. However, all claims were emailed to Mitze who ensured they were processed.   If you want exceptional service and a hassel free claim process, use Turnberry.

The service we received Turnberry was outstanding.   If I had to rate your company it would be 10plus!  The turnaround was less than 5-working days – outstanding and so it goes on. Thank you!!!!!  Michael

So far I have been very satisfied with each claim that I have submitted.  I have been emailing my claims directly online on the website, and attaching all the relevant documentation.  Does everyone need Gap Cover? ‘Do it, you never know when you might need it, trust me you won’t want to be without it!’  Tyrone Swart
